In Carmel, the Sisters referred to this prayer as an exorcism of the air. Maybe at first glance this seems intense, but the bells that would ring out into villages from the monastic communities, and that still do ring throughout Religious and Monastic communities all around the world today at 6am, 12pm, and 6pm, calling the Sisters and lay people nearby to pause and pray this prayer, are consecrated to God. They are consecrated in such a way that the very sound of them ringing is like a prayer, having a spiritual effect throughout the air, everywhere they were heard. This is so true that when Christians were persecuted in this same villages, one of the first things taken down were the bells of the Churches, which called the people and religious communities to prayer. So what is the Angelus?
The Angelus is a prayer prayed three time a day which draws us back to the moment of the Incarnation, to the moment of Mary's yes. We reflect on Mary's receptivity of the Word. We learn from her how to become receptive to the Word, to let the Word become incarnate in us, be birthed into the world through us, just as He was through her. If you're looking for a simple way to draw closer to Jesus through Mary, to learn from Mary, to build some type of relationship with Mary, this is one of the easiest, simplest of ways.
THE ANGELUS PRAYER:
V. The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary.
R. And she conceived of the Holy Spirit.
Hail Mary...
V. Behold the handmaid of the Lord.
R. Be it done to me according to thy word.
Hail Mary. . .
V. And the Word was made flesh.
R. And dwelt among us.
Hail Mary. . .
V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.
R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Let us pray: Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts, that we to whom the Incarnation of Christ Thy Son was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection. Through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.
