While the Saints may not have necessarily commented on the US Holiday known as Thanksgiving, they did have a lot to say about actually giving thanks and gratitude. In this season of Thanksgiving, here are a few words of wisdom from our brothers and sisters who are given to us as witnesses of heroic and exemplary faith.

One of the best cures for our own selfishness, sadness, or sin is gratitude. Reflecting on the gifts the Lord has given us, and asking for the grace to see the gifts given to us even in difficulty is one of the most transforming practices in the spiritual life. I pray wherever you find yourself this Thanksgiving, you may enter into the mysteries of your own story with gratitude, seeing the love God has for you hidden in all things.

“In all created things discern the providence and wisdom of God, and in all things give Him thanks.”

Saint Teresa of Avila

“The secret of happiness is to live moment by moment and to thank God for what He is sending us every day in His goodness.”

Saint Gianna Molla

“The debt of gratitude flows from the debt of love, and from the latter no man should wish to be free.”

Saint Thomas Aquinas

“The best way to show my gratitude to God is to accept everything, even my problems, with joy.”

Mother Teresa

“Thank God ahead of time.”

Blessed Solanus Casey
